Working together to keep the world in terror…

Nuclear weapons are stupid. They are too much. They prove no points, they endanger more than soldiers lives and the screw with the planet as a whole. In fact the only good purpose anyone has ever thought of was to take out that asteroid in Armageddon. And I'd like to see them try to pull that one off for real
In the news today was an offer made by Vladimir Putin to allow a US Missile shield base in Afghanistan rather than in Europe. According to the plan, because the intent of the missile system is ostensibly to protect Europe from attack from Iran, Putin says that Afghanistan is a better location because it would protect all of Europe and not only certain parts. I guess a secondary issue would be that neither Russia or the US likes Afghanistan at all, so the issue of whether or not some nuclear mayhem should take place there does nothing to move either. George Bush was said to be ill today and therefore was not available for comment except to say that the offer was interesting.

To my thinking, it simply seems interesting that both sides are in agreement that there needs to even be weapons of mass destruction. We NEED these things right? We can't live without them?

I mean, at this stage of the game, and I am talking here that we as a species at least seem to have demonstrated some modicum of intelligence in the last 62 years since Hiroshima and Nagasaki (I am speaking here of computers, satellite communication, artificial hearts and the bracelet Paris Hilton wears around her ankle while under house arrest), wouldn't you have thought that that we had gotten past this?

Ok, it's a deterrent. Let's work with this one. If a homeowner keeps a gun in his house to protect his family against unwanted guests, this is called a deterrent. If said homeowner could push a button and wipe out all of the houses within a five mile radius, this is not a deterrent. Putting a fence around your garden to keep people from walking on your carrots is a deterrent, eradiating all of the vegetation and animal life of an entire city for a period of say, 25 years is not.

So why do we need them?

Ok, they are really bitchin' weapons. But a weapon is only good when used and in last 62 years, having these weapons have made absolutely no difference in any of the dozen or so wars the US and Russia have engaged in. Zero. Zilch.

When they flew those planed into the World Trade Center, there was a remarkable situation in that there actually was a time when a little minor nuking might have been called for. Many people thought to turn Mecca into a few square miles of polished glass; could have invited everyone to leave, just take out the holy place and call it even. But they didn't. They didn't even consider it.

Why haven't they been used? Because nuclear weapons are stupid. They are too much. They prove no points, they endanger more than soldiers lives and the screw with the planet as a whole. In fact the only good purpose anyone has ever thought of was to take out that asteroid in Armageddon. And I'd like to see them pull that one off for real.

In reality, all nuclear weapons are is something to screw with the minds of us common folk with. They are just one more thing to worry about and to be afraid of. Those big shots over in Germany know this. They spent about five minutes out there talking about global warming, they said they wanted to throw some money into African agriculture, but then they had to sit there and talk about what to do with the doomsday weapons. I say take 'em apart and put 'em away. Let Afghanistan take the fallout? That's a copout and an insult to common human intelligence.

Probably this is an over simplification but I think you get the point.

Have a good weekend,

More soon…
