I am an American and have been living in Belarus (Poland not withstanding)for a bit more than five years. I am a writer, having completed so far one book (Being Had), many articles and essays, an ongoing Blog and 11 plays for theatre (including Pod Kablukom, a play in Belarusian, Russian and English languages). I am a lifetime bicyclist and a supporter of global ecology. While in Belarus I have worked as a teacher of English and an editor of Russian/English translations. I have also worked in support of the school bike racing team here in Pinsk. To learn more about the BEING HAD web project, please click HERE

I don't think the Nazi Occupation of what is now Belarus will be as popular a topic as Barry Bonds. Maybe you should stick to writing about baseball. Do they even play baseball in Belarus?
Actually they do. We have a pretty good team over in Brest and a couple of the guys can really play.
Thanks Adam, and one of these days, I am going to find a copy of the painted bird and get it to you so you can read for youself what I have spent so much effort to memorialize.
By the way, this is a hell of a good movie in its own right.
I agree. It is quite famous here. The war is at the center of people's consciousness. On the 9th of May I went to the parade and met some of the veterans. Mostly they told drinking stories but it was ok. These last few weeks we had the Day of Liberation holiday, another day for the vets to get dressed up and put on medals. I was on the bus heading to the market and one of the officers got on. I guess he was going to the theatre. He looked at me. He remembered me from the parade. I saluted him and he smiled. After this, about 20 people on the bus smiled as well. The show of respect made them all feel good.
The soviet vets deserve all the respect in the world. It would take 10 of me to have the same balls as those guys.
The costumes and sets for Come and See are just so good, and it had that "saving private ryan" realism to it, that I thought it was of the new realist genre that is common with today's war pictures.
I mentioned the film to Tanya and she said it was one of those films that are so scary that she does not want to see it again. She agreed that for Belarusians, who lost perhaps 30% of their population during the war, this film is simply too close to their souls. It is very difficult to deal with here.
